UNIVERSITY OF DERBY

Textiles

I visited the textiles exhibition that was split between three rooms; I was very impressed with how many different techniques they used to create texture and pattern. The designs were bright and displayed very well so you could clearly see how they could be used in the industry, such as on a garment or on soft furnishings. As my specialism is fashion I would consider this textiles course if I was to attend this university, however the course is based on creating surface pattern which wouldn’t be my first choice but it looks very interesting.

Commercial Photography

We viewed the commercial photography exhibition; it was interesting to see how people portrayed meaning messages through photos. Although doing a photography course doesn’t interest me it was good to see how versatile photography can be. The first piece we saw was a series of photos alongside peoples coming out stories; it was amazing to see how the student had shown emotional feelings through photographs.

Creative Expressive Therapies

This course was something I didn’t even know existed until I visited the University of Derby; it was interesting to see how art can be used throughout many different courses that can lead to different career paths. This course is part of Health and Social care and is a way of people struggling with certain issues but being able to express what they feel through a form of art. A unique piece that stood out to me was an interactive piece that showcased how the student felt like an outcast because she was left handed. To show how she felt she presented a left handed university chair and a board that was hung up on the wall, she encouraged people to write about their differences and hang them up on the board but only using their left hand. I thought this was a clever way of making people understand her struggles but also making people think of their own.
